Dr. Charles Caples planted an orchard of apple and pear trees shortly after bears decimated his original 1870 plum orchard. Designated as a Heritage Orchard in the state of Oregon in 2008, the trees are now an estimated 148 years old. The orchard includes one of Thomas Jefferson's favorite varieties, the Spitzenburg apple. The trees still produce an abundance of apples and pears each Fall. Join us for the Caples House Annual Harvest Festival in early October to press apple cider and take some apples and pears home with you.
The Caples family's carriage house was transformed into the Children's Attic, where you will find a vast collection of dolls from various eras, other period children's toys and a train set. The doll collection includes a doll that belonged to the Caples family, the First Ladies miniature doll collection, and popular dolls of the 20th and 21st centuries.
