150 YEARS OF HISTORY, 1870 – 2020

The Dr. Charles Caples House Museum urgently needs major restoration to preserve this wonderful historical home in Columbia City, OR. The original structures are now almost 150 years old! Replacing the post and pier foundation used to build the Caples’ new home in 1870 is the next phase of this five year project.

The original foundation has greatly deteriorated causing the house to “settle” quite unevenly which affects the entire building inside and out. Water damage has occurred with repairs having been done as recently as 2016. The south exterior wall siding is warped, damaged, and rotting. Extent of the damage will not be known until the siding is removed. The home’s front porch has already been cordoned off for safety.

The house interior is out of alignment due to foundation deterioration. Peeling wallpaper reflects moisture issues and, in 2017, mold/mildew was found on the west wall of the Caples House kitchen. That inside wall was repaired and the exterior eaves replaced. Roofs on Caples House and connecting breezeway were replaced in 2016.

Without restoration, the Dr. Charles Caples House Museum will continue to deteriorate and, at some point, will not meet safety standards and be closed. This project is estimated to cost between $150,000 and $200,000. Nearly $50,000 has been raised, allowing Caples Restoration Project to continue applying for grants using these matching funds. Fundraising events are being held and monetary contributions are most needed and welcome.

Restoration and preservation of the Dr. Charles Caples House Museum honors the wishes of his daughter, Dell Caples Houghton, to have their family home preserved as a memorial to her father and to be an educational, historical, and enjoyable experience for future generations. Oregon State Society DAR looks forward to celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Caples House Museum in 2020!
